In a small state like Utah that overwhelmingly favors Republicans, political infighting within the GOP is probably unavoidable.
But looking ahead to the midterm elections it seems unusual that two senior Republicans are facing primary challenges, while no one has come forward to take on Rep. Jim Matheson, the Beehive State’s lone Congressional Democrat.
Republicans say the situation stems from their domination and is an outgrowth of having an abundance of qualified candidates more than it is an indication of discontent with incumbents.
Furthermore, no one believes Matheson will ever get a pass. His district voted 66 percent for President Bush last year, while Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) took just 31 percent.
“At the end of the day we’re going to have a candidate to run against Jim Matheson,” said Ed Patru, a spokesman for the National Republican Congressional Committee. “He’s never going to have a free ride. We’re going to go after him next year as we have in the past.”
Still, it is interesting to examine the apparently legitimate intraparty challenges faced by Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) and Rep. Chris Cannon (R-Utah). |
