ARKANSAS DEMOCRAT-GAZETTE
Attorney General Mike Beebe has taken an early lead in the 2006 governor’s race, according to a poll released Wednesday by the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, the most significant poll made public in the race to this point.
Beebe, a Democrat, led former Republican Congressman Asa Hutchinson, 46 percent to 35 percent, among all poll respondents. That lead narrowed to 47 percent to 40 percent when considering only respondents who considered themselves to be likely voters.
Gabe Holmstrom, executive director of the state Democratic Party, said he expects Hutchinson’s support to suffer because Arkansans aren’t very approving these days of President Bush’s job performance. The UA poll showed Bush’s job approval rating in Arkansas at 38 percent.
“There’s no doubt that when you have a former Bush administration official running for governor on the Republican ticket, I don’t think there’s any doubt [he’s going to be affected by] Bush’s popularity,” Holmstrom said. |
