Description | Jan Smith Florez, a former teacher and judge from Nogales, officially declared her candidacy for the 2006 gubernatorial race on Tuesday, just weeks after retiring from the Arizona Court of Appeals.
The 61-year-old conservative Republican, a political unknown who has never run for statewide office, said the state is headed "in the wrong direction" under Democratic Gov. Janet Napolitano. She filed paperwork with the secretary of state's office Tuesday but is expected to not make a formal announcement in a couple of weeks.
"I'm going to work hard," Florez said. "The state is heading in the wrong direction. After four years in office, we're not doing better on education. We're not doing better on immigration. I'm going to be all over the state. I love big challenges." |
