Description | Former Federal Highway Administration director Mary Peters is expected to announce as early as next week that she will run for governor in 2006.
Peters, who was also the head of the Arizona Department of Transportation, is looking to unseat Democratic incumbent Janet Napolitano, who enjoys strong approval ratings.
Peters has emerged as a top GOP gubernatorial contender following state Senate President and Prescott business owner Ken Bennett's withdrawal from the race earlier this month.
She is expected to announce her run next week but declined to confirm Friday that she is taking on Napolitano. Peters has been meeting with top business leaders, lobbyists and Republicans regarding her likely run. |
