DescriptionWASHINGTON -- Utah's lone Democratic federal office holder, Congressman Jim Matheson, has hired a top D.C. pollster to conduct focus group research in preparation for what is expected to be an expensive fight to keep a congressional seat that national Republican strategists think could swing to the GOP in 2004.
Although he has no officially declared Republican opponent, Matheson will probably face a bruising re-election bid, as various political newsletters list him as one of the most vulnerable Democrats in the House, based on his seven-tenths of 1 percent victory for a second term in 2002 in a state where GOP President George W. Bush is highly popular.

One of Matheson's biggest campaign expenses thus far has been $21,023 for focus group studies by Bennett, Petts and Blumenthal, a Washington political research firm favored by Democrats. Of the reports filed with the FEC by late Monday afternoon, Matheson had spent more on focus groups than any other member of Congress and almost twice as much as the Republican National Committee, which spent $11,000 on focus groups so far in 2003
