Description | Rep. Charles Alexander Harvin III, South Carolina's longest continuously serving state representative, died at about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday at the age of 55.
Harvin, a Democrat from Summerton, died at a Charleston hospital following an extended illness.
For the majority of his adult life, Harvin served as a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives, representing Clarendon and Williamsburg counties.
In his last semester at Augusta Law School in 1976, Harvin ran for the House District 64 seat, which was being vacated by then Rep. John Land III, who was seeking a seat in the state Senate.
With a Juris Doctor degree in hand, 26-year-old Harvin won the seat during the November general election.
