Description | Seoul, South Korea -- June 18th, 2003, nine human rights activists in South Korea started a hunger strike against the recently introduced National Education Information System (NEIS). NEIS is a gigantic database established by the government to gather the private information of students, parents and teachers. Many civil society organisation, students groups, parents groups and teachers group criticise the implementation of NEIS, because it severely infringes the basic human rights including privacy however the Korean government has announced that despite a ruling from the national human rights commission and widespread protests by human rights workers and teachers unions, it will go ahead with plans to impose the nationwide database system. |
