DescriptionFormer state Senate President Pro Tem Peter Shumlin opted out of a race for the U.S. House on Wednesday, potentially eliminating the possibility of a Democratic primary for the seat.

Shumlin, a Putney Democrat, said he had seriously explored getting into the race to succeed Rep. Bernie Sanders, an independent who is leaving the House so he can for the seat being vacated by retiring Sen. James Jeffords.

But he concluded after a trip to Washington last week that he did not want to find himself on the road every week between the capital and his home in southern Vermont.

"On the plane home I had this overwhelming sense (that) if I won I was going to have to get up every day and fly to Washington and fly home on Fridays," Shumlin told The Associated Press.

That means that Sen. Peter Welch, a Democrat from Hartland who currently heads the state Senate, is the only announced candidate from his party for Vermont's sole seat in the House.
