Description | FLORENCE, Ore. (AP) -- Oregon could be getting a 37th county.
Lane County election officials have approved a petition by a local resident which could lead to an 864-square-mile area seceding and becoming its own county.
For the proposed Siuslaw County to materialize, the petition put forward by Keith Stanton of Florence needs to be signed by enough registered voters and then win a majority in a future election.
Coastal residents of Lane County say they're tired of being called for jury in Eugene, when they live more than an hour away. And they can't stand watching the county try to hawk property on the coast to pay for services enjoyed mostly in the valley. |
