Description | After seven, sometimes turbulent, years in government, what's next for the world's most successful Green Party? The selection of new leaders on Tuesday may have given some indication.
As expected, Germany's Greens elected the left-leaning consumer affairs minister and one of the party's chief strategists to lead the party as it prepares to enter the opposition after seven years in government.
The selection of Minister Renate Künast, who immediately resigned her office upon being elected Tuesday afternoon, and Fritz Kuhn indicates an effort by the party to reach out to its various voter blocs. Künast is traditionally an acolyte of the leftist, ecological wing of the party. Kuhn, a party veteran who briefly chaired the party with Künast in 2000, is known as one of the party's power players and a close confidante of Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer. |
