DescriptionJim Ray, superintendent of Spartanburg 3 schools based in Glendale, told his staff and friends Monday he has decided against running for state superintendent of education.

“While I know I could make a contribution leading the state education system, my heart would not be there,” Ray said.

Ray considered becoming a candidate after incumbent Inez Tenenbaum announced she will not seek a third term, but worried about the diversions of raising money and the “ugly politics that so typify modern elections.”

“I agreed to consider the race only to ensure that there would be a pro-public school candidate,” he said. “I have been assured that there will be such candidates ... from both parties.”

Karen Floyd of Spartanburg and Elizabeth Moffly of Charleston have declared plans to run when the Republican Party opens candidate registration in 2006
