DescriptionBy Patrick O'Connor

House Republicans are staffing up for a tough midterm election fight as their approval ratings continue to sag and President Bush is under fire for high gas prices, the federal response to Hurricane Katrina and the Iraq war.

As the elections approach, congressional Republicans must decide how closely they will align themselves with Bush, whose popularity remains high among GOP voters despite career-low national approval ratings.

Even though there are grumblings within the conference that the administration had not acted quickly enough, Republican House leaders rallied around Bush last week after a cascade of criticism about the federal government’s response to Katrina and the ensuing floods that submerged most of New Orleans.

In anticipation for the midterm fight, the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) recently added four members to its communications staff, including Mike Brady, a longtime aide to Chairman Tom Reynolds (R-N.Y.).

Brady will be joined by Press Secretary Jonathan Collegio, who previously served as spokesman for freshman Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-N.C.), as well as John Randall, the new director of television and radio, and Michael Ricci, who joins the committee as a speechwriter.
