Description | The Republican governor of California was in big trouble. He had waged a bitter battle with unions and their Democratic allies in the Legislature and was on the receiving end of a massive, union-financed media campaign that had driven his popularity so low that only a third of voters were inclined to re-elect him. The Democratic state treasurer was being hailed in some political circles as a virtually certain successor.
That could be a fair description of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's political situation, or at least what his situation probably will be should he lose - as current polls indicate he's likely to do - on a series of Nov. 8 special election ballot measures that challenge union power in the Capitol...
It is, however, a description of the dilemma in which Republican Gov. Pete Wilson found himself 12 years ago as he neared the end of his first, tumultuous term and faced a 1994 re-election campaign with voter support that was even a few points lower than Schwarzenegger's current standing. |
