DescriptionBruce Bannister cruised to an easy victory over William Herlong in Tuesday's runoff to win the Republican House District 24 nomination and set the stage for a potentially bruising showdown with Democrat Michelle Shain.

"Message and hustle" pulled him through, an exuberant Bannister shouted into a phone over the cheers of excited supporters at his downtown headquarters following a call from Herlong.

That message revolved around taxes, with Bannister and Herlong voicing different approaches for reducing property taxes and state spending.

Both parties have vowed to go all-out for the seat held until June 2 by House Speaker David Wilkins, now U.S. ambassador to Canada. The special general election for the last 15 months of Wilkins' term will be Oct. 4.
