DescriptionLITTLE ROCK - Drew Pritt, who is seeking the Democratic Party's nomination for lieutenant governor, challenged the three other Democrats who so far have announced for the office to a series of debates Tuesday.

"It is my hope that these debates can help assist voters in making an informed opinion," Pritt said in an e-mail news release. "The focus of elections should not be on a money chase to see who can raise the most money to put up 30 second television ads, but rather a serious discussion of visions for the future of Arkansas."

Four candidates, including Pritt, have announced they plan to seek the Democratic Party nomination in the primary election on May 23. The filing period for state offices begins at noon on March 21 and ends at noon April 4.

Pritt said he realized the election is a long way away, but he said debates would educate the voters.

Two of his three announced opponents in the party primary said Tuesday that they welcome debates.

"I certainly don't object to debates," said state Rep. Jay Martin, D-North Little Rock, who said he will officially announce his candidacy within the next few weeks. "People have the right to hear from us on issues and if the best way to do that is through debate then so be it."

Former state Rep. Mike Hathorn, D-Huntsville, who officially announced his candidacy in May, said he also would like to debate the other candidates, but he suggested waiting until after the April 4 filing deadline.
