COLUMBIA, S.C. - State Education Superintendent Inez Tenenbaum said Tuesday she will take a "political sabbatical" when her term ends in 2007.
In announcing her decision to not seek a third term as the state's top educator, Tenenbaum fought back tears while she listed the accomplishments South Carolina's schools have made in recent years - including rising SAT scores and improvement on the Palmetto Achievement Challenge Test.
"Never has education in South Carolina made more significant progress than it has in recent years," she said.
But it's also been a long two years for Tenenbaum, who lost to Republican Jim DeMint in her bid to replace retiring U.S. Sen. Ernest "Fritz" Hollings. Then she contended with attacks from groups touting Republican Gov. Mark Sanford's plan to give tax credits to parents who send their children to private schools. She doesn't expect that fight to end anytime soon.
