DescriptionMoving to assemble a powerhouse political operation, Lieutenant Governor Kerry Healey is hiring a nationally known Republican consultant who played a key role in George W. Bush's presidential campaign to head up her potential campaign for governor, advisers to Healey said.

The move underscores Healey's aggressive approach to establishing herself as the GOP's heir apparent to Romney. Hiring Stevens gives her an advantage over her potential rival for the Republican gubernatorial nomination, Harvard Pilgrim Health Care chief executive Charles D. Baker, who has yet to decide whether to run and has no political apparatus in place.

Healey's move would also separate her from the political circle that has surrounded Romney, who is considering a bid for president. Stevens is an archrival of Romney's political consultant, Michael Murphy. Healey's chief political adviser, consultant Rob Gray, has worked closely with Stevens in past campaigns and set up the deal.
