Description | It's been 15 years since the old rivals went head to head, in what was an epic battle for a rare prize, an open seat in Congress.
William Jefferson, who had already paid his dues in the state Senate, triumphed, winning the 2nd District seat long held by the Boggs family, first Hale and then Lindy.
Marc Morial, then known only as the scion of another famed political family, licked his wounds, put in a brief stint in the state Senate himself, then came roaring back to win the 1994 mayor's race against an array of more experienced foes.
With New Orleans' two most powerful and prominent posts safely in hand, Jefferson and Morial would go on to dominate the city's public realm for an era.
Their onetime rivalry evolved into peaceful, if wary, coexistence. Until Morial left office and headed to New York to run the National Urban League, they seemed to lead parallel political lives.
Apparently, they're still leading them.
