DescriptionThe Libertarian National Committee met this weekend. It considered several major problems the party is facing.

One of the most controversial was the issue of membership. Harry Browne's faction in the party instituted a membership dues of $50 and a Unified Membership Plan which the state affiliates balked at. The plan was initiated because the party is in a financial crisis. At the meeting this weekend, these membership plans were scrapped in favor of the "Squyres Zero Dues Proposal."

Advocates of the change argue that the old system shifted the Libertarians from a political party to a social club. They believe that the new membership plan will assist the party in electing political officials rather than being constant footnotes in political history.

The Zero Dues Proposal passed 8-7, and the UMP was repealed by a vote of 10-5.
