Independent gubernatorial aspirant Kinky Friedman started vending an action figure of himself this week, and the chairman of the Texas Democratic Party weighed the possibility of Friedman entering action as a Democratic contender next year.
The writer-singer also confirmed that he did not vote for more than a decade, until November.
Autographed Friedman action figures are available online for anyone who donates $100 or more to his campaign.
The strategy, inspired by an action figure in TV commercials for former professional wrestler Jesse Ventura when he ran for governor of Minnesota in 1998, has raised about $30,000 since Tuesday. If the campaign raises $75,000, it will commission 10,000 figures -- with some for sale at about $30 each.
Probably more of a long shot are chances of Friedman entering the March 7 Democratic primary rather than remaining an independent, though such a shift is being entertained by Charles Soechting of San Marcos, chairman of the state Democratic Party. |
