Jackson, activists criticize Daley over hiring scandals

| Description | Hiring scandals at City Hall are stopping money from flowing into neighborhoods and keeping qualified workers who lack political ties from good jobs, activists told a rollicking crowd Saturday afternoon in a downtown church.
U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. (D-Ill.), last in a lineup of nearly 20 speakers, demanded a more open City Hall.
Mayor Richard Daley cannot take credit when things go well, then claim ignorance when they do not, Jackson said after addressing about 700 cheering people at First United Methodist Church at the Chicago Temple.
"If you don't know who's being hired in transportation, in Streets and Sanitation, in [the water department], in the minority hiring program, if you're not responsible for any hiring, then who's running the city?" Jackson said.
Daley, speaking at an event on the West Side, declined to comment on Jackson's remarks, but the mayor said he has long condemned illegal actions.
"Wrongdoing is wrong," Daley said. "It's as simple as that. It doesn't represent an entire workforce, it doesn't represent the entire administration." |
