NORFOLK — A statewide poll shows that fewer than half of potential voters recognize the names of the candidates for lieutenant governor and attorney general, and both races are a dead heat.

At this point, the poll showed, most voters would cast their ballots along party lines.

Republican attorney general candidate Robert F. McDonnell holds a thin lead, 35 percent to 34 percent , over Democratic candidate R. Creigh Deeds. Thirty-one percent of those polled said they were undecided.

McDonnell, from Virginia Beach, has his strongest support in Hampton Roads.

In the lieutenant governor’s race, Republican William T. Bolling has a slim lead of 37 percent over Democrat Leslie L. Byrne’s 34 percent. Twenty-nine percent of those polled said they were undecided in that race.

The poll has a margin of error of 4 percentage points, making both races statistically even.

Each candidate was about even among independents, but about half those voters said they were still undecided.

Mason-Dixon Polling & Research Inc. of Washington, D.C., interviewed 625 registered voters by telephone between July 19 and 21 .

All of the respondents said they were likely to vote in the November general election. The results were released Friday for publication today.
