DescriptionRepublican Secretary of State Jan Brewer has never lost an election in her more than 20 years in public service as a state legislator and Maricopa County supervisor. Elected to the state’s second highest office in 2002, Mrs. Brewer is Arizona’s top elections official and first in line to serve as acting governor. Arizona Capitol Times interviewed Mrs. Brewer on July 6, three days prior to Governor Napolitano’s departure for a vacation in Russia and business stops in Europe.

Mrs. Brewer was a delegate to the 2004 Republican convention. A cardboard cutout of President Bush stands in Mrs. Brewer’s office.

In 2000, the U.S. Supreme Court halted the recount in Florida and declared George W. Bush the winner of the presidential election. Al Gore supporters vilified Katherine Harris, then Florida’s secretary of state. Since your election in 2002, have you imagined yourself in that kind of a situation?

In my worst nightmare. After what happened in Florida, you would always take that into consideration. But I feel I would be up to the job and do the fair and just thing.

Ms. Harris, now a congresswoman, is rumored to be thinking about running for the U.S. Senate. Are you considering a run for governor?

Whoa. (Laughs) No, and there’s a resign to run law in the state of Arizona — you know you have to be in your last year [before a salaried, local or state elected official may declare for a different elective office].

Is that why you’re saying no?

No, I’m concentrating right now on being the best secretary of state that Arizona has ever had.
