Description |
The first woman to be selected musical director of a top orchestra in the United States is taking the post amid a musicians' revolt over her appointment.
The board of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra appointed Marin Alsop, 48, on Tuesday. Alsop becomes the first woman to hold the top artistic post of one of the 24 largest orchestras in the U.S. – the BSO has 100 musicians and a $30-million budget.
A players' committee has declared that Alsop's appointment was "opposed by the vast majority of the orchestra," who dispute the strength of her "musical profile." |
