DescriptionOne Salvi just opted out of one of the top congressional races in the nation, but another Salvi is ready to step in.

"I'm not running," said Al Salvi. "My wife is. ... Kathy has the fire in the belly."

The former Republican U.S. Senate and secretary of state nominee said his wife is not ready to officially declare her candidacy in the northwest suburban 8th Congressional District, but he expects her to do so around Labor Day.

"You're asking me my opinion. I think she is definitely running, but her position is she is considering a run for the 8th," he said. "I'm pretty close to the candidate. My sense is she is running."

Kathy Salvi would be the third Republican -- and second woman -- entering the race to challenge U.S. Rep. Melissa Bean, the Democrat who became a top GOP target after she ousted veteran congressman Phil Crane last year.
