DescriptionAMES, Iowa (AP) - In a move certain to send shivers up the spines of Democrats in every corner of the state, yet another generation of Grassley is heading into politics and not setting many limits.

"It's something I've been exposed to," said 22-year-old Pat Grassley. "Politics is the way you can touch the most people. I'm willing to work hard and stand up for my beliefs."

He's spending a lot of time these days motoring around the state soaking up advice, and he's got one of the best dispensers of political wisdom anywhere - his 71-year-old grandfather, U.S. Sen. Charles Grassley.

"We've been together a lot lately," the younger Grassley said. "I've been trying to get as much advice as I can, like a sponge, you know."

Few are as well-equipped to pass out political wisdom as the elder Grassley, arguably the state's most successful politician.

Grassley was elected to the State Legislature in 1958, and hasn't lost an election since, a 47-year run that's left him heading the Senate Finance Committee and being one of the biggest players in Washington.

His grandson is now following in his footsteps, running for a northeast Iowa legislative seat virtually identical to the one his grandfather represented nearly 50 years ago. While Grassley has famously stayed out of party battles during his career, don't expect that to be the case in this legislative election.

"I'm going to get involved in it," Sen. Grassley said. "I've come to the conclusion that if a grandfather can't help his grandson, he's not much of a grandfather."
