Washington — Rhode Island Democrat Sheldon Whitehouse, who announced plans to run for the Senate just three months ago, already has nearly as much in his campaign coffers as the incumbent Republican he is challenging — Sen. Lincoln Chafee.

Whitehouse, a former state attorney general, has raised about $775,000, and will finish the second quarter with nearly $1 million, according to his spokesman Michael Guilfoyle. Whitehouse started the race by pumping $360,000 of his own money into his campaign.

Meanwhile Chafee, a moderate Republican who has been targeted by national Democrats, raised about $400,000 in the last three months, and will report a bit more than $1 million in cash on hand, according to his spokesman Stephen Hourahan.

“We're right on track where we want to be, and raising the money we need to raise,” said Hourahan. “We expected this to be a very competitive race.”

Chafee is seeking his second full term. He took office in 1999 after the death of his father, Sen. John Chafee, and was elected to his first full term in 2000.
