Congressman, were you called or not?

I have been recently confused about articles in both the Journal and Courier and the Indianapolis Star pertaining to Congressman Steve Buyer. As a supporter of Buyer in the last general (November) election, I was shocked to learn that Buyer's original statements about being activated to military service might appear not to be true.

I'm not wishing to attack Buyer. However, Buyer left several important questions unanswered. As our congressman, he has a duty to inform us on what really happened and whether or not he lied.

In order to help clarify, a few questions should be answered. First, Congressman, were you at any time called to active duty? According to your words, I have been called to active duty in the U.S. Army. If you were not called to active duty, why did you claim you were?

Second, did you receive a full paid leave of absence from Congress because of this claim? If so, do you intend to give the money back because you left for false reasons?

I would hate to think that Buyer lied to Congress, the military and to his constituents. I would further hate to think that Buyer, for political gain, used a war in which men and women died. I have written this editorial so that if this is not true, Buyer can set the record straight. I hope Buyer will respond so that this misunderstanding, which we all hope it is, can be clarified. If he doesn't, the silence will speak for itself.
