DescriptionWith recent announcements of layoffs at Dan River Inc. and the closing of the Diebold plant, the Danville area’s unemployment pangs should only grow in the immediate future.

Through May, the Danville metropolitan area ranked 13th from the bottom in lowest unemployment of 367 metros across nation, according to Virginia Employment Commission statistics.

While Southside continues to suffer, the Washington D.C. area tops the nation for lowest unemployment in the 50 largest metros, and Richmond ranks fourth.

Danville’s metropolitan area, which includes Pittsylvania County, saw unemployment grow seasonally from 7.4 percent in April to 7.7 percent in May as students returned home for summer break, Virginia’s chief economist William F. Mezger said.
