Description | Beset by declining vocations to their way of life, the Little Sisters of the Poor announced Wednesday they will close their Mary Joseph Residence for the Elderly and leave the city, ending 137 years of caring for the elderly poor in New Orleans.
Their decision ends a distinctive presence in New Orleans marked by a unique spiritual daring.
First in white bonnets that mimicked their founder's peasant dress, then in full white habits that other Catholic nuns abandoned long ago, Little Sisters of the Poor said they chose to demonstrate the power of grace by begging daily among New Orleanians to support their work.
In the end, they said, they ran out of nuns, not grace.
