Description | “Over the past few weeks, Julie and I have given serious consideration as to whether I would seek to serve Florida’s 13th District in the United States Congress. Many people have written and called me with encouragement; for this, I am honored and grateful.
“Since my constituents first sent me to Tallahassee in 2002, I have had the opportunity to affect change on issues important to all Floridians: Medicaid reform, children’s welfare, environmental responsibility, and education, among others. By virtue of my relationship with my colleagues, I have earned a leadership role in the Florida House of Representatives. At this time, it is my heartfelt belief that my current role continues to be a better opportunity to positively shape state policy than Congress.
“Therefore, after much thought and deliberation, I shall remain in the Florida Legislature.
“It was announced yesterday that my longtime friend, Vern Buchanan, will run for the congressional seat. I know Vern to be a strong voice for small business, a generous philanthropist, and a steadfast warrior for the family values that the people of the 13th Congressional District hold dear. I hope that my friends and neighbors in Manatee County will join me in supporting Vern Buchanan for Congress.” |
