DescriptionIf I simply read it to you--and did not tell you that it was a prepared speech delivered on the floor of the U.S. Senate--you almost certainly would believe the remarks were made by some sworn enemy of the United States, perhaps the murderous Osama Bin Laden himself.

In fact, the utterances of Illinois U.S. Sen. Richard Durbin constitute nothing short of a war crime--treason--against America and its citizens. The senator is a traitor to his nation.

Then, as I think about it, I realize some may believe that crosses the line of responsible commentary and criticism. To you, I extend my heartfelt apologies. I never intended any disrespect. In fact, my chin is quivering as I write this. Honest, it is. Want to see the tears?

There, that was easy.

I can say something cruel and preposterous to make a point and then later apologize--not for what I said, but for the fact that it upset you. Simple.

Dick Durbin offered just such an apology last week--almost word for word--in response to the outcry over his ignorant and ill-advised remarks likening American military personnel to Nazis and Communists. He even mustered up a tear or two as he backpedaled.

That should pretty well take care of the firestorm engendered by the vomit he spewed forth on the Senate floor a week prior. Americans are famously forgiving. We're suckers for a politician who apologizes, particularly if he can work up a crocodile tear or two.

But both the style and the substance of Durbin's pronouncements deserve more discussion.
