Description | Sir Reg Empey narrowly won the Ulster Unionist Party leadership last night - the new head of a still-divided party.
The former Executive Minister became the party's 13th boss, succeeding David Trimble, on just over half of the Ulster Unionist Council vote - with main challenger Alan McFarland close on his heels - while David McNarry achieved less than 10% The East Belfast Assembly member had almost 53% of the vote against 47% for his North Down opponent - 321 votes against 287.
It is as slim a margin as Mr Trimble had during his long succession of crunch UUC meetings over recent years. But Sir Reg hit the ground running, meeting the delegates immediately after a second round of voting, and promising to revitalise party ranks.
After the first round of counting Sir Reg was ahead only narrowly - on 295 votes (47.8%) against 266 for Mr McFarland (43.2%) and Mr McNarry with just 54 (8.8%).
He was then eliminated and the council voted again - although some members left.
Each of the candidates gave 10-minute speeches and faced 15 minutes of questioning before the first vote of the 619 delegates - out of a total of 789 entitled to attend - got underway. |
