Description | "It’s easy to talk a good game about being a “fiscal conservative.” Saying you’re concerned about being fiscally responsible and looking out for the public’s money is what every politician says at election time. Words like “prudent’ and “accountable” get thrown around all the time when talking about the budget.
The problem comes when you have to actually back up this empty rhetoric with actions that take just a little bit of courage and candor. These traits are apparently lacking in the State Assembly, particularly the Democrats who are in control. The issue this time around involves the poorly conceived and insufficiently funded property tax rebate program that sends dollars from Trenton to New Jersey citizens in an effort to divert our attention away from how out of control property taxes really are.
A few months ago, Acting Governor Codey made it clear that the rebate program was in serious jeopardy. He said that our fiscal house was out of control and that giving money back to tax payers at a time when the state faced a nearly $4 billion deficit made no sense."
