At the age of 47, at a point when most Foreign Service colleagues of his generation are still laboring as regional desk officers in Washington or deputy chiefs of mission in modest U.S. embassies abroad, R. Nicholas Burns ’78 is already in his fourth high-profile job. Since August 2001, Burns has been the U.S. ambassador to NATO, and as such he is a significant player in the arenas of American foreign policy that seem to matter most now: the twin struggles against the terrorists of Al Qaeda and Iraq’s Saddam Hussein."
