ALBANY, N.Y. -- Former federal Housing Secretary Andrew Cuomo has opened up a lead over his best-known rival for the 2006 Democratic nomination for state attorney general, but nearly 40 percent party members remain undecided, a statewide poll reported Monday.

The Siena College Research Institute poll had Cuomo, the elder son of former Gov. Mario Cuomo, favored over former New York City Public Advocate Mark Green, 30 percent to 21 percent, with 39 percent of Democrats undecided.

A February poll from Siena had Cuomo favored by 19 percent of Democrats and Green favored by 17 percent with 56 percent undecided.

The race for the attorney general nomination _ Democratic incumbent Eliot Spitzer is running for governor next year _ is shaping up as a possible last-gasp effort for the younger Cuomo and for Green.

Cuomo, in the face of dismal poll numbers, quit the race for the 2002 nomination for governor just before the Democratic primary in his first bid for public office. Green, who has failed twice in bids to get elected to the U.S. Senate, lost the 2001 New York City mayor's race to Republican Michael Bloomberg.

The Democratic nomination for attorney general is also being sought by state Assemblymen Richard Brodsky of Westchester County and Michael Gianaris of Queens; former U.S. Attorney Denise O'Donnell of Buffalo; housing advocate Charlie King of Rockland County; and former Clinton administration aide Sean Patrick Maloney of Manhattan.
