DescriptionAdults in the United States have begun to assess the type of candidate they would support in the next presidential election, according to a poll by Rasmussen Reports. At least 42 per cent of respondents would vote for a "Moderate Democrat" in 2008.

The survey did not offer the names of particular nominees, but provided a definition based on ideology and party allegiance. The "Moderate Democrat" would defeat a "Conservative Republican" by 11 per cent, and a "Moderate Republican" by four per cent.

In other prospective contests, a "Liberal Democrat" holds a one per cent edge over a "Conservative Republican." A "Moderate Republican" would defeat a "Liberal Democrat" by eight per cent.
