Description | BOSTON - The state Legislature is poised to repeal Massachusetts' landmark Clean Elections law, five years after voters overwhelmingly voted to put it on the books.
Under a budget compromise unveiled Thursday, House leaders — long the most ardent opponents of the law — agreed to a Senate budget amendment that eliminates publicly financed campaigns.

The only hope for preserving the law is Gov. Mitt Romney. The Republican governor has consistently said that taxpayer dollars should not be used to finance political campaigns at a time when the state is being forced to make cuts in health care and services to the poor. Romney's press secretary said the governor will "take a look at the budget in its entirety."
