Description | Washington Post article.
An excerpt...
"For the third time in 15 days, the Senate confirmed a conservative appellate court nominee who had long been stymied by Democratic filibusters, giving President Bush another victory today from a bipartisan accord that averted a partisan showdown.
William H. Pryor Jr., former attorney general of Alabama, was confirmed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit by a 53 to 45 vote. Pryor, 43, has been serving on the court thanks to Bush's recess appointment, but it would have ended this year had the Senate not granted him the lifetime appointment.
Three Republicans -- Lincoln Chafee of Rhode Island, Susan Collins of Maine and Olympia Snowe of Maine -- voted against Pryor. Two Democrats, Ben Nelson of Nebraska and Kenneth Salazar of Colorado, voted for him. Sens. James Jeffords (I-Vt.) and Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) did not vote.
Liberals denounced Pryor's staunch opposition to abortion and his criticisms of the Voting Rights Act. But Republicans defended him and said his confirmation was long overdue."
