An excerpt...
"The man who helped build the landmark Del. 1 bridge over the Chesapeake & Delaware Canal may become its namesake.
Delaware's congressional leadership has introduced legislation to name the bridge after the late Sen. Bill Roth. If the measure is approved, the structure would be called the "Senator William V. Roth Jr. Bridge."
In the early 1990s, Roth persuaded fellow lawmakers to pay for the $58 million bridge without using state funds by pushing its importance as a relief route for U.S. 13 traffic. He also contended the state was not responsible for the project because the federal government had built the canal.
The span, with its distinctive yellow cables, opened in 1995.
"In a small state like Delaware, you have a wonderful opportunity to change people's lives for the better," said Sen. Tom Carper, D-Del., who introduced a bill approved Wednesday by the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee. "Bill Roth set the gold standard for constituent services, for helping people solve their problems. All of us in the Senate should emulate that kind of dedication."
Carper first discussed the bridge-naming idea with Roth's widow, U.S. Third Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Jane Richards Roth, who said the family was delighted." |
