Description | "MANVILLE — Mimicking his 2001 campaign schedule when he seized the Republican nomination for governor, Bret Schundler started election day Tuesday greeting commuters at the Hoboken PATH station.
But if this spot proved lucky four years ago, the charm has worn off. On Tuesday, the former Jersey City mayor Schundler lost his bid for the GOP gubernatorial nomination to multimillionaire Doug Forrester by about 13,000 votes.
The scene at Rhythms of the Night, the Manville club where the Schundler camp awaited results, involved emotion that ranged from subdued to shocked, and one supporter proclaimed it "the death of the conservative party.""
