DescriptionMONTGOMERY — The legislative work isn't harder, and the trips to and from Montgomery aren't longer. But the traffic on Interstate 65 gets worse, and the desire to spend more time in North Alabama gets stronger.

For a combination of reasons, Rep. Tommy Carter said it will be time to pass the political torch to someone else when his term ends in 2006.

"I have thoroughly enjoyed it. I am humbled when I think of the trust people placed in me all these years," the 70-year-old Democrat from Elkmont said Wednesday. "It is simply time to come home, get refocused, do a little gardening and a little fishing and play with the grandchildren."
