Description | Former vice presidential candidate Geraldine Ferraro trailed a House lawmaker yesterday in their campaign to challenge GOP Sen. Alfonse D'Amato.
On the year's final busy primary night, Rep. Charles Schumer held a commanding early lead in New York's three-way Democratic field that included the only woman ever to run on a major party presidential ticket.
D'Amato, considered one of the Senate's most vulnerable Republicans, was unopposed in the primary. Early in the counting, Schumer had 53 percent of the vote, City Public Advocate Mark Green had 24 percent and Ferraro had 18 percent. New York television stations projected Schumer the winner based on exit polls.
Ferraro's celebrity made her the instant frontrunner after entering the race in January, but she had trouble raising money and lost a commanding lead in the polls to a better-funded Schumer. Out of office since 1984, the former congresswoman faced questions about whether she had the credentials to be a force in Washington after the long absence.
A loss would probably end the political career of Ferraro, who finished second in a four-way 1992 primary |
