DescriptionOne of the Senate’s quietest members is raising his profile as he prepares for a reelection campaign next year.

Sen. Daniel Akaka (D-Hawaii) isn’t known as one of the Senate’s legislative heavy hitters. When his name is mentioned on the floor, it’s usually because the clerk has begun calling the roll alphabetically.

But this year, Akaka has engaged in a flurry of legislative activity — offering prominent amendments to budget and bankruptcy legislation, while delivering numerous floor speeches.

“People have asked me, ‘How come you’re still here?’” Akaka, 80, said in an interview off the Senate floor. “Because I like it. If I didn’t like it, I’d leave.”

Akaka, who served seven terms in the House before being appointed to succeed the late Spark Matsunaga (D) in 1990, added, “I like the people. I’m able to help Hawaii. As long as my health is good, I’m there. I’m running in ’06.”
