Description | WASHINGTON — Freshman Rep. Henry Cuellar is holding fundraisers in Texas this week for a re-election bid that could see two Democratic challengers in the party primary next year, officials said Friday.
Cuellar, D-Laredo, picked up $60,000 during an Austin fundraiser Thursday evening and scheduled another Friday in the border town of Zapata, where he hoped to raise another $20,000 for his campaign.
The congressman held the events as he accused a potential challenger, state Rep. Richard Raymond of Laredo, of violating laws that ban officials from raising funds during a legislative session and not filing paperwork with the Federal Election Commission.
"If he wants to be in Congress, he is going to have to live by a little higher standard," said Colin Strother, Cuellar's chief of staff in Washington.
The attack on Raymond for fundraising was made by Jason Stanford, a Cuellar spokesman in Laredo.
Raymond told the San Antonio Express-News that Cuellar's accusations "are false and reckless. If he spent his money consulting a lawyer instead of a political hack, he would realize I am following guidelines."
Raymond said he found it ironic that Cuellar made the accusations on the day he raised $60,000 for his campaign in Austin. |
