Description | A day after Bernard Landry said he's stepping down as leader of the Parti Québécois, a longtime rival has announced she wants the job.
Former finance minister Pauline Marois, now the party's education critic, made her intentions known as she left a PQ caucus meeting on Sunday. Marois has been vying for his job since last fall when she called for a leadership race.
Landry had received 76.2 per cent of a confidence vote on Saturday, but still chose to quit as leader of the separatist party and give up his seat in Quebec's National Assembly.
The support, he told the party on Saturday night, was simply not enough to continue.
"I cannot in my soul and my conscience lead the party through what is ahead with the support that I received," Landry said. |
