While Madison's mayor is offering to dump the city's new minimum wage ordinance if the governor agrees to veto a bill which would ban cities from enacting minimum wage laws, one of the prime movers in getting the Madison ordinance passed is asking for a criminal investigation into the deal cut by the governor and Republican leaders.

Ald. Austin King sent Attorney General Peg Lautenschlager a formal complaint Friday detailing how a deal was cut between Gov. Jim Doyle and Republican leaders in which Doyle agreed to sign GOP legislation forbidding cities from enacting minimum wage scales and the Republicans agreed to allow Doyle to raise the state minimum wage this year and next.

King said that is in direct violation of the state's anti-log- rolling statute, which makes it a class I felony to agree to vote on an item in exchange for promises that the governor would approve of another item.

"Reasonable people might disagree about whether the deal was a good one for each side," King said. "But everyone acknowledges that the deal happened, and when they look at the wording of the logrolling statutes, the only available conclusion is that the law was trampled."
