The former deputy to state Treasurer Gus Wingfield has sued Wingfield for firing her after she testified before the Ethics Commission on a nepotism complaint against him.

In a complaint filed in U.S. District Court on Tuesday, Sharlett Craig alleges that Wingfield called her into his office on May 25, 2004, and told her "she had fallen out of favor over the investigation and her testimony regarding the Ethics Commission investigation."

Four months earlier the Ethics Commission had fined Wingfield $750, and the treasurer acknowledged he violated an ethics law that prohibits officials from using their positions to secure special privileges for their children.

But in July 2004, Wingfield promoted one daughter, Valerie Wallace, from investment accounting manager to chief operating officer and raised her salary from $55,995 to $73,143 a year. He also promoted another daughter, Margaret Gutierrez, from executive secretary to treasurer assistant and raised her pay from $40,666 to $53,344 a year.
