DescriptionFormer Virginia Gov. Jim Gilmore is backing state Del. Robert F. McDonnell of Virginia Beach for attorney general over Steve Baril, a Richmond lawyer also seeking the Republican nomination in the June 14 primary.

Gilmore, standing with McDonnell, state Del. William R. Janis, R-Henrico, and Henrico Sheriff Mike Wade, made the announcement yesterday in front of a Henrico County courts building. Gilmore prosecuted cases there as a commonwealth's attorney before he was the state's attorney general and then governor.

McDonnell outlined homeland-security measures he would pursue if elected and promised better accounting of federal dollars being spent to protect Virginia against terrorism. Homeland security was a major initiative for Gilmore, who was governor when terrorists crashed an airliner into the Pentagon in Northern Virginia on Sept. 11.
