CHICAGO (AP) -- The former chief of staff to former state House leader Lee Daniels has been indicted on criminal charges of mail fraud, theft and extortion conspiracy.
According to the indictment, Michael Tristano allegedly directed state employees to perform political campaign work on state time. He is also charged with steering one-point-three (m) million dollars in state funds to benefit a private real estate venture.
The 49-year-old Tristano was the chief of staff when Daniels was the Republican leader in the state House of Representatives and minority leader in the House of Representatives.
Daniels stepped down as chairman of the Illinois GOP amid an investigation into allegations that his legislative staff did campaign work on state time.
Daniels was House Republican leader from 1983 to 2003 but announced he wouldn't seek the job again. His control over the Republican caucus was shaken in 2002 by accusations that his government employees had done political work on state time. Records showed workers making hundreds of visits to politically important legislative districts in 2000. |
